Last reviewed: 25 October 2026. HGV eligibility depends on occupation lists that the Home Office updates, so check GOV.UK before you act.
Many websites advertise HGV and truck driver jobs in the UK with “fully funded visa sponsorship”. Before you pay anyone or leave your job, you should know what the sources we reviewed actually say.
Quick answer
- HGV driving (SOC 8211) is shown as not eligible for the Skilled Worker visa in the 2026 occupation data we reviewed, because the Skilled Worker route now generally requires a job at RQF level 6 (graduate level) since 22 July 2025.
- This is not a new position. A 2022 industry report also said HGV drivers could not be sponsored, and the short-term haulage visas offered in 2021 have ended.
- The general salary floor is £41,700 a year for new Skilled Worker applications, which is above what many driving jobs pay. The median basic pay for this occupation was £36,556 in ASHE 2025, according to one visa data site.
- We could not confirm any current official scheme that sponsors overseas HGV drivers. If an employer says otherwise, ask for the sponsor licence number and the Certificate of Sponsorship in writing.
Why “sponsored truck driver” adverts are risky
Sponsorship needs a licensed UK employer and an eligible job. Where the job code is not eligible, a legitimate employer cannot lawfully issue a Certificate of Sponsorship. Adverts that promise it anyway are often collecting “processing fees” and then disappearing.
Routes that may apply to some drivers
| Route | Who it may suit | Honest limits |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Worker (other eligible job) | Someone with a degree-level job offer, for example logistics or transport management | Driving itself is not the sponsored role |
| Family or other existing right to work | People with a UK spouse, settled status or similar | Needs its own visa category |
| Youth Mobility Scheme | Young people from eligible countries | Limited countries and places, fixed period |
Licence and training reality
Even with the right to work, you would need to hold the correct UK driving entitlement. Non-UK licences can be exchanged only in some cases, and many drivers must take UK tests and the driver qualification. Check the current rules on GOV.UK driving with a non-GB licence and with the DVSA before you plan a move.
What to do instead of paying an agent
- Look up the employer on the official sponsor register.
- Check the job code in the Skilled Worker eligible occupations list.
- Ask for the written job offer, pay and hours before you accept anything.
- Never pay for the Certificate of Sponsorship. Employers pay that fee themselves.
Red flags and scams
- Anyone asking you to pay for a job offer, a Certificate of Sponsorship or a “guaranteed visa”.
- Job adverts with very high pay for beginners, or no interview.
- Contact only through WhatsApp, Telegram or a free email address with no company website or address.
- A sponsor that is not on the official register. Check the Home Office register of licensed sponsors before you share documents or pay anything.
If you think you have been targeted, stop paying, keep all messages and receipts, and report it to your local police. You can also email us at info@careerjobss.com.
