Netherlands Work Visa 2026: Routes, Salary Rules and How Sponsorship Really Works

Last reviewed: 25 October 2026. Dutch immigration thresholds are updated every year and higher 2027 figures have been announced, so please check the official links before you apply or pay anyone.

Many adverts promise sponsored Dutch jobs paying anywhere from €70,000 to €220,000. The real picture is more modest and more useful to understand. The figure of about €70,000 is close to the legal minimum salary for one visa route for people aged 30 or over, not a typical offer, and a €220,000 salary is something no website can promise you. This guide explains how Dutch work permits actually work in 2026.

Quick answer

  • There is no single “Netherlands work visa”. A legal guide updated in September 2026 lists eight permits that allow work, and most of them need an employer.
  • Your employer applies, not you. For the highly skilled migrant route, the employer must be a recognised sponsor of the Dutch immigration service (IND).
  • Salary is a legal minimum, not a promise. For 2026 the minimum gross monthly salary for a highly skilled migrant aged 30 or over is €5,942, excluding holiday allowance.
  • Lower-paid jobs are much harder. The single permit route requires the employer to show that no suitable candidate could be found in the EU or EEA.
  • Fees are modest. The IND fee is €423 for most work permits, so nobody should charge you thousands for “sponsorship”.

The main routes at a glance

RouteWho it suitsIND fee (2026)Processing time
Highly skilled migrantSkilled workers with a job at the salary minimum, from a recognised sponsor€423IND aims for 2 weeks, legal limit 90 days
EU Blue CardDegree-level workers at the Blue Card salary level€42330 days via a recognised sponsor, otherwise 90
Single permit (GVVA)Paid work over 3 months where no EU or EEA candidate is found€42390 days
Intra-corporate transfereeStaff moved within a multinational company€42390 days
Orientation yearRecent graduates looking for work€25490 days
Seasonal workShort seasonal jobs€25490 days, or 60 for returning workers

Start-up and self-employed permits also exist. The IND can extend the processing times above, so treat them as targets, not guarantees.

What salary do you actually need?

These are the 2026 minimum gross monthly salaries, excluding the 8 percent holiday allowance. The yearly figures are our own simple calculations from the monthly amounts.

CategoryMinimum per monthAbout per year (x12)About per year with 8% holiday allowance
Highly skilled migrant, age 30 or over€5,942€71,300€77,000
Highly skilled migrant, under 30€4,357€52,300€56,500
Reduced criterion (orientation year, or within 3 years of graduating)€3,122€37,500€40,500
EU Blue Card€5,942€71,300€77,000
EU Blue Card, reduced criterion€4,754€57,000€61,600

Two more points. First, the salary must also be in line with what the market pays for a comparable job, and the IND can ask the Dutch employee insurance agency (UWV) to check it. Second, a report dated September 2026 says the government has announced higher thresholds for 2027 that had not yet been approved by Parliament, so figures may rise.

What about lower-paid jobs?

Some sites claim that warehouse, farm or construction workers can easily get sponsored for €45,000 or more. The official routes do not work that way. The single permit has no fixed salary threshold, but the employer must show that no suitable EU or EEA candidate is available, and the vacancy usually has to stay open with the UWV for about five weeks. That is a real hurdle, so sponsored jobs below skilled level are rare and should be treated with suspicion.

Recognised sponsors: how to check an employer

Only companies recognised by the IND can apply for highly skilled migrants. The IND checks their reliability, continuity and financial health before registering them, and in 2024 its public register held roughly 10,000 companies. From 1 January 2026, sponsors must also keep bank records showing the wages they pay and keep them for at least five years after the sponsorship ends.

  1. Search the employer’s exact name in the IND public register of recognised sponsors on the IND website.
  2. Apply for the job through the employer’s own careers page or a well-known job board.
  3. Ask the employer in writing which permit they will use, and whether they will apply for it.
  4. Check that the salary in your contract meets the threshold for your age and permit.
  5. Never pay a person for a “sponsorship slot” or “work permit”. The IND fee is paid in the official process.

Requirements checklist

  1. A job offer and employment contract from a Dutch employer (for most routes).
  2. An employer that is a recognised sponsor if you are using the highly skilled migrant route.
  3. The salary threshold for your age and route.
  4. Skills and qualifications that fit the job.
  5. A signed statement that you have no criminal record, which the IND requires for the highly skilled migrant route.
  6. A provisional residence permit (MVV) if your nationality needs one for stays over 90 days. It is usually applied for together with the residence permit.

Family members apply for their own permits, with you as their sponsor. If you change employers, the new employer must meet the rules and the salary threshold for your age at that time.

The 30 percent tax ruling

Some highly skilled migrants can get a tax benefit called the 30 percent ruling, where the employer pays a tax-free allowance worth 30 percent of gross salary. According to the Amsterdam expat service page updated in February 2026, you must be recruited from abroad, agree in writing with your employer, and have a salary after the 30 percent deduction of at least €48,013 in 2026 (or €36,497 for some under-30 workers with a Dutch master’s degree). Only salary up to €262,000 counts from 2026, and the ruling lasts up to five years. The page also says the rate falls to 27 percent from 2027 for some people, but its wording is not fully clear, so confirm with the Dutch Tax Office before you plan around it.

Red flags and scams

  • Anyone asking for money for a job offer, sponsorship, “slot” or guaranteed work permit.
  • An employer you cannot find in the IND recognised sponsor register but who says it will sponsor you as a highly skilled migrant.
  • A salary far above the market for a junior or unskilled role.
  • Contact only through WhatsApp, Telegram or a free email address with no company website or address.
  • Pressure to pay quickly or to send passport copies before any interview.

If you think you have been targeted, stop paying, keep all messages and receipts, and report it to your local police. You can also email us at info@careerjobss.com so we can warn other readers.

A realistic view for 2026 and 2027

  • The best chance is a skilled job at a recognised sponsor that already pays above the threshold. The employer does the paperwork and the process can be quick.
  • Graduates have a special route. The orientation year and the reduced salary criterion exist for recent graduates, so ask the IND about your eligibility.
  • Thresholds change every year. The salary you need next year may be higher than the figure in this guide.
  • High salaries exist, but they are not guaranteed. Senior specialists in some sectors can earn far more than the minimum, but no advert can promise that for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Netherlands work visa without a job offer?

For most routes you need an employer. The main exceptions are the orientation year, the start-up permit (with a recognised facilitator) and the self-employed permit, each with its own conditions that you should check with the IND.

What is the minimum salary for sponsorship in 2026?

For the highly skilled migrant route it is €5,942 gross per month for people aged 30 or over, €4,357 for people under 30, and €3,122 under the reduced criterion, all excluding holiday allowance.

How long does processing take?

The IND aims for about two weeks for highly skilled migrants, with a legal limit of 90 days. Other routes are usually up to 90 days and can be extended.

Can my family come with me?

Family members apply for their own residence permits, with you as the sponsor. Check the IND website for the requirements that apply to your family situation.

Do I need an English or Dutch test?

The permit requirements we read do not list a language test for these work routes, but employers set their own language needs for the job. Check the IND page for your specific permit before you pay for any test.
