Study Artificial Intelligence in the UK: Entry Requirements, Student Visa and Costs (2026)

Last reviewed: 25 October 2026. University fees and entry rules are set per course and per intake year, so use each university page for the exact figures.

The UK is a popular place to study artificial intelligence, but entry is competitive and costs vary widely. This guide explains how admission, the Student visa and funding checks work.

Quick answer

  • Most MSc AI courses are one year full time. For example, the University of Edinburgh MSc Artificial Intelligence for 2027 entry runs one year from 13 September 2027, with an application deadline of 31 March 2027.
  • Entry is strict. Edinburgh asks for a UK 2:1 or equivalent in a listed subject, programming coursework, and at least 30 ECTS in mathematics, including probability and statistics.
  • English: Edinburgh asks for IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, with at least 6.5 in three parts and 6.0 in the other. Other universities set their own levels.
  • Fees differ by university. Use the fee page for your chosen course and year. We did not find a single official average price.

English at B2 level is required. Students on degree-level courses can usually work up to 20 hours a week in term time. Since 1 January 2024, dependants are generally allowed only for doctoral-level (PhD) students, so most master’s students cannot bring family.

After graduation

The Graduate visa has allowed most graduates to stay and work after study. The government has announced it intends to shorten it, so check GOV.UK Graduate visa for the length that applies to your start date. To work long term, you would still need a sponsored job that meets Skilled Worker rules, as explained in our UK cyber security guide.

Step by step

  1. Shortlist courses and read each entry requirement page carefully.
  2. Take an approved English test if your degree does not exempt you.
  3. Apply and pay any deposit only to the official university page.
  4. Receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and apply for the visa on GOV.UK.
  5. Check whether your course needs extra security clearance. Some technology courses do, so ask the university.

Scholarships

Scholarships exist but are competitive. Look at each university scholarship page and the UK government Chevening and Commonwealth schemes. Be careful of any site that “guarantees” a scholarship in exchange for a fee.

Red flags

  • Agents who charge large unexplained fees or promise guaranteed admission.
  • Fake university websites with a slightly different web address. Always find the university through an official search.
  • Requests to pay tuition to a personal bank account.
