Household and Domestic Work in Germany for Foreigners: What Is Legal in 2026

Last reviewed: 25 October 2026. Au pair and work rules can change, so confirm them with the German embassy before applying.

Some adverts promise high-paying domestic jobs in Hamburg with free housing and visa sponsorship. We looked for an official “domestic worker visa” in Germany and did not find one in the sources we read. This guide explains the legal options that do exist and the figures you can check.

Quick answer

  • No stand-alone household worker visa appeared in the official routes we reviewed.
  • The au pair visa is a cultural exchange for ages 18 to 26, up to 12 months, not a work route.
  • The statutory minimum wage is €13.90 per hour in 2026, about €2,410 gross for a 40-hour week.
  • Claims of €5,500 a month plus free housing for entry-level cleaning or housekeeping should be treated as a warning sign.

Au pair: what the host family must provide

  • A host parent who is a German citizen or permanent resident and speaks German at home, and at least one child under 18.
  • A private lockable room of at least 8 square metres with a window, and free room and board.
  • Health, accident and liability insurance for the whole stay.
  • At least one full day off per week and one full weekend off per month.
  • At least €70 a month towards a language course.
  • A signed au pair contract and an invitation letter.

The au pair visa cannot be extended beyond 12 months or changed into a different visa while in Germany, according to a commercial guide from November 2025, so check the embassy rules.

Checking pay claims

At €13.90 an hour, a full-time worker earns about €2,410 gross per month before tax and social insurance. A job paying much more than that for no qualifications, with free housing, needs proof. Ask for a written contract that shows the hours, pay and who the legal employer is.

Red flags and scams

  • Anyone asking you to pay for a job offer, a “guaranteed visa” or a work permit slot.
  • Job adverts with very high pay for beginners or no interview.
  • Contact only through WhatsApp, Telegram or a free email address with no company website or address.
  • An employer who says no recognition or documents are needed. Most routes need verified qualifications.

If you think you have been targeted, stop paying, keep all messages and receipts, and report it to your local police. You can also email us at info@careerjobss.com.
